One business owner who has already recognised that value is Emma Bolton of Real Health.

As a small independent business that falls below the rateable value threshold, Emma was not required to become a levy payer. However, she made the decision to join Coleraine Connect as a voluntary levy payer because she believes the benefits far outweigh the cost.

Emma said: “As a small independent business which falls below the rateable value threshold, I am not required to pay a BID levy. However, I chose to become a voluntary levy payer because I genuinely believe the value far outweighs the cost.

“For my levy, I receive promotion through social media, inclusion in newsletters and magazines, exposure through town-centre marketing campaigns such as the town radio, proud member recognition, access to networking opportunities, and the chance to connect with other local businesses.

“If I were to purchase similar advertising independently, it would cost significantly more. A single advert in a local publication could easily exceed the cost of a year's voluntary membership.

“Beyond the promotional benefits, I believe it's important to support initiatives that help strengthen our town centre. A thriving town benefits everyone who operates within it, regardless of the size of their business.

“I also chose to join the Coleraine BID/Coleraine Connect Board because I felt it was important that local business owners had a strong voice in the organisation. Having retailers and traders directly involved helps ensure decisions are grounded in the realities of running a business in Coleraine and that the priorities reflect what local businesses actually need.

“As someone who represents the smaller business community, I would encourage any business that falls below the levy threshold to consider voluntary membership. It provides access to valuable support, promotion and networking opportunities, while also giving businesses a chance to contribute to the future success of our town centre.

“For me, it wasn't about paying a levy; it was about investing in my business and investing in Coleraine."
