Coleraine Connect is delighted to welcome Advanced Care Services to Coleraine town centre. Led by Director Niall Smyth, who has more than 43 years’ experience as a nurse, Advanced Care Services brings extensive knowledge and a deeply personal approach to supporting individuals and families.

Established in 2007, the organisation provides domiciliary care, supported living and bespoke support services. Its new presence in Coleraine will help make these services more accessible to people across the town and surrounding area.

Care That Fits Around Your Life

At the heart of Advanced Care Services is the belief that care should be shaped around the individual, not the other way around.

For Niall and his team, good care is about much more than completing a list of essential tasks. It means taking time to understand the person, their routines, interests, relationships and what matters most to them.

Support may include personal care, help with medication and preparing meals, but it can also mean accompanying someone to the shops, the hairdresser or an appointment, enjoying a walk or social outing together, or simply providing companionship and reassurance.

This flexible approach helps people continue doing the things they enjoy while remaining connected to their families, friends and community.

An Alternative to Rushed Care

Advanced Care Services aims to provide continuity and build trusted relationships between clients and their care workers.

Rather than relying on a traditional system of short, rushed calls involving numerous carers, the organisation seeks to match clients with a smaller, familiar team. Care workers can then get to know the individual properly and provide support at times that work for them.

Niall explained that personality is especially important when recruiting staff. While essential care skills and professional training can be taught, he looks for people who are naturally kind, positive, friendly and able to communicate well.

For someone receiving care in their home, seeing a familiar, cheerful face can make an enormous difference to their day.

Bespoke Domiciliary Care

Advanced Care Services supports older people, individuals living with dementia or disabilities, and those with more complex care needs.

Services can include:

  • Personal care and assistance with daily routines

  • Medication support

  • Shopping and meal preparation

  • Companionship and emotional support

  • Help with household management

  • Transport, errands and attending appointments

  • Social activities and community outings

  • Respite support for family carers

  • Supported living for people with learning disabilities, autism or mental ill health

Every care package is designed around the person’s needs, choices and goals. This could involve shorter visits for practical support or longer periods of one-to-one care that allow someone to remain safely and happily in their own home.

Making Direct Payments Work for Families

Advanced Care Services can also work with individuals and families who receive direct payments from their Health and Social Care Trust.

Direct payments may allow a person to have more choice over how their assessed care hours are used. Rather than following a standard timetable, support can be arranged around what the individual genuinely needs and values.

Advanced Care Services can manage the employment, training, vetting and administration of care workers, removing much of that responsibility from families. Privately funded care can also be added where someone wishes to receive support beyond their Trust-funded package.

This can give families greater flexibility while helping loved ones maintain their independence, routines and quality of life.

Supporting Independent Living

The organisation also provides supported living services for adults with autism, learning disabilities and mental health needs.

These services are designed to help people live fulfilling lives within their own homes and communities. Support may include managing a household, preparing meals, using local services, developing life skills, enjoying social activities and making everyday choices with greater confidence.

Advanced Care Services works alongside individuals, families and other professionals to create personalised plans that respect each person’s dignity, preferences and aspirations.

Creating Local Career Opportunities

The new Coleraine office at Kingsgate Street will also create opportunities for local people interested in a rewarding career in care.

Advanced Care Services provides the professional training required for the role and is particularly interested in people who are compassionate, dependable and able to bring warmth and positivity into someone’s home.

By recruiting locally, the organisation hopes to build a strong Coleraine team and expand the availability of flexible, person-centred care throughout the area.

Coleraine Connect is delighted to welcome Niall and the Advanced Care Services team to the town centre and wishes them every success as they become part of Coleraine’s growing business community.
